Dreamville’s Lute dropped his sophomore album Gold Mouf on Oct. 4th and took to Los Angeles to celebrate the release. The Gold Mouf event, which was held on Monday, Oct. 11th, showcased some of the flyest detail you can think of.
A lowrider car was parked outside the event and featured Lute’s album cover painted on the hood. As you walked inside, you could hear the dope tracks of 90s hip hop to the latest songs dropping from the DJ booth. On the left side of the room stood an artist who was painting a canvas of the rapper, which was revealed to Lute at the end of night.
The scene was an intimate event as people conversed and took pictures in front of a gold backdrop. There was even a section where guests could gem up their teeth for a ‘Gold Mouf’ from Tooth Couture Tooth Gems.
As the vibes were live and fun during the event, Lute took a few minutes to speak with Home Grown Radio about his latest album Gold Mouf.
Home Grown: So Gold Mouf just dropped. Can you tell me a little bit about how you’re feeling that finally, everyone is able to listen to your album?
Lute: I’m not gonna lie, initially I was very nervous, but now I’m super ecstatic and very grateful. And proud of myself that I put this shit out because everybody’s receiving it so well, and I had no idea how people were going to receive it. Cause you know, like people want to turn up, have a good time, and this is more about mental health, anxiety and depression and shit. I’m like nobody wants to hear that. At the same time though, the fact that it’s been received so well, I’m very proud of myself for putting this project out. I love it. And everything else that’s followed from it, I’m ecstatic.
Home Grown: So let’s talk about the album title. Why did you decide to name it Gold Mouf?
Lute: Gold Mouf is like um … have you ever seen The Nutty Professor? So you know how Buddy Love is to Professor Klump when he’s at his highest, like his confidence? Gold Mouf is my confidence when my anxiety kicks in, and my confidence level is low. Gold Mouf is when I feel my highest. We live with these masks. We have these certain masks when we go out into the world, and Gold Mouf is my mask when my self-care, and self-love is at its highest. That’s why I named the album Gold Mouf.
Home Grown: What were some of your inspirations for this album?
Lute: To be honest, my inspiration behind this album was my failures and my goals, and what I wanted to see out of this. And what I wanted to see out of my life and whatever it was that I was trying to strive for it was. When the pandemic hit, I didn’t know — I felt like my life was fuckin’ shuffled and disarray, and shit was all over the place, you know what I’m saying. For me, it was just trying to find myself and my inner peace and just trying to find me. That’s why I appreciate at the end of the album — from the top, it’s just like optimistic about life and everything that’s going on in your life, you go through your trials, and at the end of your journey is you end up finding yourself and realizing you love yourself. And you love your journey and whatever it is that you’re going through, you accept that for what it is.
Home Grown: What would you say is the difference between this album and your last album [West 1992 Pt 2]?
Lute: Growth. Honestly growth. I was in a different place in my last album from this album. I went through so much more with this album than I did my last album. So I feel like growth is the biggest difference between this one and the last one.
Home Grown: You do have some collaborations with some of the other Dreamville members. How was that being able to work with them?
Lute: Nah, fire! Like Cozz, J.I.D, Ari. Even the other features, like just to have features in general ‘cause I went through this album day by day, and I didn’t know who was going to be on here. So to have Cozz, Saba, J.I.D Ari, BJ The Chicago Kid, and it fits so well — that meant a lot to me because these are people that I look up to. These are people that inspire me. And even Westside Boogie. These are people that inspire me, so to have them on there meant so much to me.
Home Grown: If you could describe your album in three words, what would it be?
Lute: Self-Care. I don’t think that’s three words, but that’s two words. Self Care — that’s literally what it is. Self-Care and loving yourself.
Lute’s Gold Mouf album is out on all streaming platforms. Make sure you check it out!
