The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Since the start of the year there have been a multitude of celebratory events, such as the 2023 Grammy tribute and many other Hip Hop celebrations around the world.

Along with those tributes came many different opinions. A recent interview with DJ Vlad, rapper Consequence describes how the ’90s hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest “changed the way street kids made music.” Consequence, who has been a part of multiple ATCQ records, has realized that the group revolutionized the way hip-hop sounded during its prime.

As the interview continues the rapper says “This is in the midst of the crack epidemic, referring to the early 1990s. “At the same time, the Central Park Five were picked up.” Consequence went on to praise the group for their adaptability during different periods. As they evolved as people and a group they were able to showcase those shifts in the music, which changed hip-hop from being an escape to being relatable.

Consequence says, “A Tribe Called Quest to have a collective going on, also, their creative vibe with The Jungle Brothers and De La Soul which revolutionized the way street kids approached the music business.” Praises like this have led the group to prevail in hip-hop 30 years after their debut, showcasing just how impactful they are.

In February, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced A Tribe Called Quest has been nominated for the 2023 induction ceremony. If inducted the group will join fellow Hip Hop artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash, and more.
