Essence Festival Showed Us Why They’re “The Festival Of Culture”

The Essence Festival also referred to as the “Festival of Culture ” returned to New Orleans this past weekend (June 29) for their 29th annual multi-day event at the Caesars Superdome. 

This year the festival headliners included Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot and Megan Thee Stallion, making it the first time the festival had an all-Black women lineup. 

Essence celebrated 50 years of Hip-Hop with some performances from old ‘skool’ Hip-Hop artists like Slick Rick who performed his hit classic “The Show” with Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane. The crowd went crazy when Doug E.Fresh did a beat-box set.

The festival closed out with Angie Martinez hosting an I R L Experience honoring women in Hip-Hop that included Trina, Remy Ma, Salt ‘N Pepa who had the crowd “pushing it” to hit single “Push It” and Eve performing her timeless hit “Who’s That Girl.”

Black businesses from clothing brands, jewelry lines and Black-author books filled the Superdome showcasing Black excellence. Familiar faces like Oprah and VP Kamala Harris were all in attendance.

The festival curated numerous of panels over the weekend some included “Hip Hop in Fashion” with Gia Peppers and Misa Hylton, The Power of The Pivot with Devine Blacksher and Chanelle Howell, From HBCU to CEO with Rocsi Diaz, Melissa Butler, and Amber Anderson and much more powerful discussion highlighting Black culture and success. 

The CEO of Essence Caroline Wanga held an influential conversation with rapper Rick Ross about what it takes to be a boss. 

New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne was the festival’s surprise guest and put on a stellar performance representing his city.

The Essence Festival is deeply embossed in African-American heritage, this annual celebration has evolved into one of the most iconic events, attracting thousands of people from across the world. The Essence Festival has become a true testament to the power of culture and a platform for showcasing diverse voices.
