Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which targets Drake, has sparked considerable debate about its Grammy nomination chances. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. recently offered his perspective on the song’s potential in a conversation with TMZ.

Mason, leading the Academy since 2021, pointed out that the ultimate decision rests with the Academy’s members. “Obviously it’s a hot record,” he remarked. “It’s amazing artistry, great writing. The talent on that record is incredible. And you got artists that have been nominated before, and Kendrick obviously has been successful with the organization, so I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t be.”

Addressing concerns about the track’s controversial lyrics, Mason was confident it wouldn’t hinder its chances. “I think the voting members of the Academy appreciate greatness,” he said. “They appreciate what’s hot, what’s going on. That’s a relevant record that’s impacting on so many levels. So much creativity and talent. I like to believe that the Academy members recognize that and vote appropriately.”

Should “Not Like Us” receive a nomination, it would be the first diss track to win a Grammy. Historical examples include Drake’s “Back to Back,” which was a contender for Best Rap Performance in 2016, and LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out,” which won Best Rap Solo Performance in 1992.
