The BET Awards returned to the Microsoft Theatre at L.A Live in Los Angeles this past weekend (June 25) and it brought out some of Hip-Hop’s heavy hitters and rising stars.
What made this year’s 2023 BET Awards even more special is that this is also the year we celebrate 50 years of Hip-Hop.
The night was filled with nostalgic performances that made you feel like you were back in the 80s when Sugar Hill Gang performed “Rappers Delight”, the Dirty South when Young Jeezy, Master P and T.I hit the stage and even the 305 when Uncle Luke, Trina and Trick Daddy took over and rocked the crowd. The Caribbean segment with Spice, Dexta Daps, Davido and Skillibeng had us feeling like we were on the islands. This culture mash-up is one for the books.
Busta Rhymes was honored with this year’s BET Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hip-Hopanimated and funky music videos, his entertaining persona and his one of a kind lyrical style with 25 years in the game.
The awards show also pays tribute to Tina Turner with a performance from Patti LaBelle and a heartfelt performance by Quavo and Offset as they reunite for the first time in the public eye to honor Takeoff.
Some big winners of the night included Latto as she took home “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist”, Kendrick Lamar as “Best Male Hip-Hop Artist”, Coco Jones with “Best New Artist” and much more. Check out the full list of on BET.com.
