On Thursday, September 14, TikTok and Billboard unveiled the “Top 50 TikTok Billboard Chart.” This innovative weekly chart is dedicated to spotlighting the hottest tracks on TikTok within the U.S.

Accessible to every TikTok user in the country and also available on Billboard.com, this chart holds the distinction of being the first to gauge music’s popularity on the video-sharing app. Its rankings draw from a mix of content creation, video views, and user interactions from the U.S.-based TikTok audience. Fans can anticipate new releases every Thursday, beginning this week.

TikTok has revolutionized the musical landscape in a remarkably short time. It’s more than just a platform for sharing fleeting moments; it has become a pivotal space for discovering, propagating, and shaping the future of music. Through its snappy videos and ubiquitous challenges, old songs find new life and underground tracks rise to mainstream prominence overnight. For many artists, a song’s virality on TikTok can be a game-changer, catapulting them from obscurity to top-of-the-charts fame.

Rapper, Sexyy Red is the first artist to top the chart, with “SkeeYee” starting at No. 1 on this week’s inaugural TikTok Billboard Top 50.

“I am so excited that so many of my songs are charting on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart,” said Sexyy Red. “I always knew I would be a No. 1 type of artist, so I want to thank all my fans on TikTok for running my music up! I’m just being me on TikTok and people love it.”

The positioning of songs on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart hinges on several key metrics. This includes the count of user-made videos featuring the song, total video views, and overall user engagement.

Distinct from most other Billboard charts that get updates on Tuesdays, the TikTok Billboard Top 50 will see its fresh releases every Thursday.

For TikTok enthusiasts eager to view this chart, it’s easily accessible within the app. By tapping the circular icon at the screen’s bottom, users will spot a ‘Music Charts’ button in the top right. Clicking on it reveals the full 50-track listing for them to explore.

This partnership not only solidifies TikTok’s position as a formidable force in music discovery but also highlights Billboard’s adaptability, embracing new metrics to gauge song popularity in the digital age. As the lines between traditional media and new-age platforms blur, the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart serves as a testament to the dynamic future of music, where virality and traditional acclaim merge in harmony.
