The vibrant culture of Hip Hop is set to take center stage in Los Angeles this weekend, with a special pop-up exhibit from the traveling Hip Hop Museum. This exhibit is a precursor to the grand opening of the permanent Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx, slated for 2025. Los Angeles residents and visitors will have the opportunity to delve into the roots of Hip Hop, exploring artifacts that date back to the genre’s inception from 1973-1990.
The museum’s journey began in New York and has graced cities like Atlanta, Houston, and Charlotte. After its Los Angeles engagement on November 11 at the Hudson Loft, the exhibit will make its final stop in Miami. Admission is free, with doors open from 11am to 7pm.
In a testament to its significance, the State of New York has supported the Universal Hip Hop Museum with a $3.5 million grant. The museum is part of a larger $349 million Bronx Point project that will also offer affordable housing and public open spaces.
Commemorating 50 years of Hip Hop, a Grammy tribute event is also scheduled to take place on November 8, featuring performances by Hip Hop luminaries including Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, marking one of Smith’s first major public appearances post the 2022 Oscars incident. The Grammy Salute will be recorded for a December broadcast, and tickets are available for those wishing to attend the taping.
The tribute’s lineup boasts a who’s who of Hip Hop, from pioneers like LL COOL J, Queen Latifah, and Rakim to contemporary artists like Gunna and Latto, showcasing the genre’s evolution and its impact on music and culture. This event is a part of the ongoing celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, underlining the genre’s vibrant legacy and its continued influence on the music industry.
