“If I’m challenging myself in the studio, I want to challenge you [the listener] as well.” -KL
Legend in the making Kendrick Lamar graces the cover of GQ Style’s first ever holiday issue!
–In addition to their inaugural holiday issue, GQ enlisted legendary producer and co-founder of Def Jam Records, Rick Rubin, to interview one of Hip Hop’s most brilliant minds–never having met him before. In the interview Kendrick opens up to Rick about his extensive rap career, experiences and milestones he’s reached.
The two icons also discuss Kendrick growing up during the peak of Hip Hop and his musical inspirations; where his boundless curiosity for music has landed him; his writing process; balancing music and family while being a certified musicholic; how “Alright” is a staple in Hip Hop and this generation’s gospel protest track (which Kendrick sat on for a long time before releasing) and more!

Rick asked Kendrick if he could ever see himself recording an album that he doesn’t rap on in which the lyrical connoisseur responded, “I think I got the confidence for it. If I can master the idea and make the time to approach it the right way, I think I can push it out.”
Maybe Rick sparked a new rapless sound out of Kendrick? Because following the interview the two hit the studio. Nonetheless, hopefully we’ll get to hear what the two worked on soon. Watch the full interview below and click here for Kendrick’s full GQ Style fashion spread.
