On a mission to put on for the city that made him, Jayson Cash is leaving his mark on the hip-hop music scene. Heavily influenced by the West Coast at large, the rapper and songwriter from Carson, California balances gaining wisdom through his own first-hand experiences with learning from the example set by the legends who helped pave the way before him.
Growing up, Cash’s musical upbringing radiated around the church, with his grandfather’s ministry encouraging him to participate in the youth choir and explore his own creative gifts. While readying his first independent release in December 2017, Cash’s world came to a halt when he was tragically shot three times as a result of passing by a gang initiation gone horribly wrong. For Cash, his unwavering faith and relentless drive played a crucial role in his road to recovery, from dropping a freestyle while in his hospital bed to relearning how to walk.
Throughout the past several years, Cash has embraced his calling as a rapper with full force, working tirelessly to pick up where he left off and see where his career can take him next. Intentional with his every move as an artist, Cash recently inked a deal with Atlantic Records and is currently gearing up to release a series of singles ahead of his long-awaited project.
We recently caught up with the artist during Rolling Loud CA 2024, where he talked about his music, being at the music festival for the first time, putting on for his city and the plans he has for the rest of the year.
Check out our exclusive conversation with him below and while you’re at it, be sure to stay tuned for what’s to come from Jayson Cash.
Home Grown Radio: You just had your first Rolling Loud in your hometown of Los Angeles. How did that feel?
Jayson Cash: CAAARSON! Man… It feels amazing! It was lit. It was crazy… Man… I looked in a crowd and just seeing people I knew, it was just dope to see.
Home Grown Radio: You recently dropped a new song, “Nobody” with Tha Eastie Boyz and Zoe Osoma. Tell me about that?
Jayson Cash: Man… you know I was seating in the studio and I was like man I gotta do some sh*t… I have been hearing about so many people that I sound too much like I’m too West Coast and I used to try to change it and switch it and I was like man, f*ck that if I’m too West Coast, ima be too West Coast. Whoever f*ck it, they gonna f*ck with it. I mean nobody tells somebody in there in Atlanta that they’re too Atlanta. Nobody tells nobody in Detroit they’re too Detroit. So if I’m too West Coast then I might well get that mother*cker tatted. I’m going to be West Coast. Call me little DJ Hed around this mother*cker.
Home Grown Radio: Speaking of the West Coast. You were in the studio with Top Dawg Entertainment, and you said he had given you some good game, what good game did he give you?
Jayson Cash: To keep doing this sh*t. He was telling me to be mindful with how I put out the content that I don’t want to over flutter and over saturate. To really lean into who you are man he brought up nobody and that’s what made me like you know I gotta put that song out is that where you
Home Grown Radio: You also mentioned on social media, “West Coast still booming… don’t shoot the messenger” is that where that comes from?
Jayson Cash: Yeah, yeah.. still crackin’!
Home Grown Radio: Since we are Home Grown, what does Home Grown mean to you?
Jayson Cash: Home Grown means everything to me and that’s why I’m not gonna compromise who I am. I’m not gonna water down what I am. Man, I came up man I seen head I seen Hed, Chuck Dizzle in that spot in Inglewood doing interview. Interviews like the one of Kendrick [Lamar] before they were who they are now. And a lot of people, they got to see the finished product so like I look at the people from where I’m from and see where they took it and I’m inspired and just let me know I can do this sh*t too. So, Home Grown means everything. I’ll never forget home.
Home Grown Radio: Finally, any more dope plans for the rest of the year?
Jayson Cash: Man… they’re gonna have to tell me to stop dropping music. I’m with Tha Eastie Boyz working on that project. We finally finalizing my project. I got a bunch of features. I got a bunch of songs that I wrote for other people that’s getting ready to come out. Some big records too. You know I’m very excited I think a lot of people don’t know that I really have a pen and I think they’re going to find that out this year.
