Kendrick Lamar won big at the 2023 BET Awards in Atlanta, taking home awards in every category he was nominated in and establishing new records.

The 2023 BET Awards, which aired on Oct. 10 and took place on Oct. 3 at the Cobbs Energy Center in Atlanta, saw Lamar win awards in four categories: Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer and Video Director of the Year along with Dave Free.

The Compton native took home more awards than every artist that night and made history as the first artist to win Hip Hop Artist of the Year three times, the first to win Lyricist of the Year nine times, tied Kanye West’s and Jay-Z’s four Best Live Performer wins, and along with Dave Free, Lamar became the first to win Video Director of the Year back-to-back.

Lamar owes these wins to his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, which he released in 2022 and is one of the highest grossing tours of all time, surpassing Drake’s touring record earlier this year. Lamar’s arrived at the 2023 BET Awards with other accolades like the 2023 GRAMMY Award for Best Rap Album and a nomination in the Album of the Year category.

This critically-acclaimed album and tour, allowed Lamar to win over artists like J-Cole, Cardi B, and 21 Savage, all of which are prolific artists in their own way.

Lamar wasn’t the only artist on a record breaking tour to receive awards that night. Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE won Album of the Year, with single BREAK MY SOUL clinching the Viewer’s Choice Award and BET Her Award. Drake and 21 Savage took home the Hip-Hop Album of the Year Award along with the Best Duo or Group award.
