Lil Yachty is on the road for his The Field Trip Tour, where he’ll be performing his latest album Let’s Start Here. Before embarking on this tour, Yachty provided Complex with an interview about his restless energy, his friendship with Drake, and his tour.

“Drake is much more into actually living life as to where I am literally trying to record music every day,” Yachty shared with Complex. “And I don’t know if I get that from him of like, ‘Oh, I should go live a life too,’ because I enjoy not living life, I enjoy making music.”

Yachty, who features heavily on Drake’s upcoming album For All The Dogs, said he prefers staying inside and recording music most days as opposed to partying like his OVO friend. His latest album Let’s Start Here, which pivoted away from the rap genre into the alternative/indie soundscape, was a product of those endless music-making days.

The album was met with disappointment from some of his fans due to a lack of rap, while critics like Pitchfork, who rated the album a six out of 10, cited his new “experimental” sound as too familiar. Now, Yachty has been rapping a lot more like on his latest single Tesla, but he doesn’t want anyone trying to predict his next sound.

“I’m just an artist, you know? I’m not a mumble rapper. I’m not a one-hit wonder. I’m not a…I don’t know, I’m just an artist,” Yachty said, restating a similar comment he made this year about being called a rapper. “I love to rap. I love to sing. I love to write. I love to produce. I’m just an artist, and you should never expect anything because I will always do something unexpected.”

He’s carrying that same spirit to his tour where he’ll be performing Let’s Start Here. He’s nervous, but also excited to share this music live with fans.

“I have no clue how people are gonna react… and I haven’t toured in five years, and I toured three times before in 2017, and when I would tour those three tours, I’d see super fans. I’d see the same people a lot of times. They loved me,” Yachty said.

“And if I know anything, I imagine these people are gonna come again. It’s a different show, and I’ve grown so much and so much has changed in my life,” he continued.

Lil Boat’s message to fans attending his tour: come with an open mind.
