Nija is Worth The Wait

Nov 17, 2021

“I been on my job, I been gettin’ the bag, yeah

I been making bank, probably more than your dad, yeah

I be puttin’ in work, got the world on my back, yeah”

– “Ease My Mind” Nija

Nija Charles (pronounced “Nee•zjuh”), is extremely talented. At only 24 years old she’s got the music industry in the palm of her hand as shes one of the most sought-after songwriters in the studio. In addition, the young boss is breaking barriers for herself and other Black songwriters.

Nija is already sprinkled over your music library. Chloe Bailey’s “Have Mercy,” Chris Brown’s “No Guidance,” Cardi B’s “Ring,” Ariana Grande’s “Positions” & “Rain On Me” ft. Lady Gaga, Summer Walker’s “Come Thru” ft. Usher & Beyonce & Jay-Z’s “Heard About Us” (just to name a FEW!) — are all top-charting hits.

Those tracks are versatile in genre and artistry, but Nija is the glue that holds and molds them together. She’s already penetrated Pop, Christian, Hip-Hop, R&B & Afrobeats genres. Proving she’s a pistol that doesn’t miss and can’t be put in a box. Her pen game goes beyond ‘Urban’. Because for her, it’s all about the feeling of the music.

The New Jersey native got her start in 2003 when her demo was placed on Christian Hip Hop rapper Lecrae’s “Lucked Up” (from his All Things Work Together album) where she co-wrote and was featured on the song. Since then Nija’s soared her way to the top with her pen and the force of Legion Management behind her. Unstoppable and untamed.

Her love of creating music unfolded in her grandmother’s basement making beats. After attending New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorder Music she fell in love with songwriting.

But little did Nija know then, she would soon be a trailblazer for other songwriters in the field — especially Black. When pigeon-holed into writing specifically for Rap/HipHop & R&B songs, Nija went against the grain (thankfully) and wrote Ariana Grande’s “Rain On Me” & “Positions.” Both breath-through records still in rotation. Illustrating that when given the opportunity Black songwriters — and even artists can penetrate any genre when talent and passion are present.

She’s already got two Grammys under her belt (Everything Is Love/ Best Urban Contemporary Album + Invasion of Privacy/ Best Rap Album) and 11 nominations, with no signs of slowing down. Nija already has two more charting records to add on her resume, “Ex For A Reason” & “Throw It Away” on Summer Walker’s album Still Over It. Based on the score board, why would she slow down? It’s her time.

Now, she’s ready to take forefront.

Earlier this year Njia told PEOPLE magazine:

“I feel like me creating my own music was always bound to happen. “I’ve written for so many of my favorite artists and there’s still a part of my creativity that the world hasn’t been able to see yet. Also as a writer, I’m telling other people’s stories, so I’m more of a vessel and I feel it’s my time to share my story.”

With what creativity we’ve already seen from Nija on behalf of others, it’s inevitable her own work will match up. And not just her songwriting or artistry, but her legacy. In an interview with Glamour she shared:

“I want to become a mogul, so I’m starting my own production company. I want to sign artists and producers and writers and also give them the platform—to be in the position that I am in one day. I want to become a household name, look at the bigger picture, and just grow as a creative and an entrepreneur.”

We’re patiently waiting for Nija to debut her album, because we know she’s worth the wait. In the meantime run up those streams & get into her visuals from the project, “Ease My Mind,” “Finesse” & the latest “On Call” below.
