Recap: Digable Planets Reunited Rebirth of Slick at The Novo

Jun 12, 2018 ,

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their Grammy award-winning album Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), Digable Planets brought their funky, jazz hip-hop sounds to The Novo on Friday.

The Brooklyn based trio composed of Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug graced the stage with their band of “Culprits” who gave life to the only left jazz heads in Los Angeles. Despite a few technical difficulties with their mics, each rapper delivered their unique flows and gave a legendary show that fans have been waiting for.

After performing hits from their celebrated album with tracks like “It’s Good To Be Here” and “Nickel Bag” they tested the crowd with songs on their 1994 album Blowout Comb. It was refreshing to go to a hip-hop show that embraced it’s jazz roots. Although I always appreciated the brass and electric sounds from the band, I never fully understood how crucial they were until I experienced it live.

Check out shots from the show below and listen to their latest album for a taste of their live experience.
