A number of our favorite artists are using their platforms to speak out against the recent surge in anti-Asian violence. Rihanna, Pharrell, Jhené Aiko, John Legend and more are posting to the trending hashtag #StopAsianHate.
The hashtag gained momentum after an Atlanta shooting left eight Asian American women killed. In the past year alone, nearly 3,800 hate incidents against Asian Americans have been reported.
In light of the movement, R&B star Jhené Aiko shares her grandfather’s story via Instagram— a Japanese American defense lawyer who fought for equality and justice in Los Angeles.
“Grandpa Teddy fought for his family and his community until his dying day. I owe it to him to continue to fight for justice and equality for my communities as well. It’s up to all of us to make a change. To choose love over hate. To choose understanding and compassion.”
Along with the “B.S.” singer, celebrities and artists continue to show their condolences and thoughts on preventing racially-motivated hate crimes.
