Compton has always been known for its Hip-Hop and Rap influences, but the shift to R&B is coming in especially with the rise of Savanna Gibson, better known as SDolla. A Compton native herself, her style is fun and laid back. She brings in a new light to the R&B genre.

With a strong music background, and influences such as Rihanna, Sdolla describes herself as a pop/r&b artist. Through her music she hopes to inspire people to just go for their dreams and to never give up.

Home Grown Radio recently caught up with Sdolla, where we talked about a slew of topics. From growing up in the city, her musical influences and the music she’s working on.

Check out our interview below and be sure to follow her on Instagram: @Sdollasignmusic.

Home Grown Radio: Tell us about yourself? Where are you from?

Sdolla: My name is Sdolla, and I’m an upcoming artist from Compton,CA.

Home Grown Radio: What was your beginning with music?

Sdolla: Growing up my favorite musician to listen to was Rihanna. She inspired me so much, from writing to singing.

Home Grown Radio: How would you describe your style musically?

Sdolla: My style of music, I would say is pop/r&b. I like fun music, but I also like that slow “heart on my sleeve” music.

Home Grown Radio: What would do want people to feel when they listen to your music?

Sdolla: I want people to gain happiness from my music, I want to inspire folks. I want them to feel free and bold. People need to know that it’s okay to take the right risks and be open to learning new things in life. Don’t ever box yourself in!!! Go for that jump you’re scared to take!!!

Home Grown Radio: Who or what are some musical influences?

Sdolla: I listen to other artists occasionally, but Rihanna was on 24/7. I didn’t want to put any other Cd in the CD player but hers!! Her music taught me a lot about the different emotions a woman has, and never being scared to express them. To me that’s very important.

Home Grown Radio: When did you know being an artist could work for you?

Sdolla: In 2018 I showed my father the second song I’ve ever recorded, which was titled “Black Love” and he absolutely loved it. He was sick and in the hospital so he would go around showing all the nurses the song and tell them “that’s my singing angel” to me….that truly warmed my heart. Nothing means more to me than my family. He told me I’m going to change lives, and never give up. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Home Grown Radio: Tell the people what you are currently working on?

Sdolla: As of right now, I’m working on a video for my newest single release. I’m super excited about this one because it shows a different side of me, a more happy, confident side to be exact. So I want everyone to be on the lookout.
