Stevie Crooks – “Street Elegance” (Album Review)

Mar 4, 2020

This is the coolest movie you’ve ever heard. From the opening track, Stevie Crooks reminds you that he’s cut from a different cloth. From rapping to producing 10 out of the 14 tracks, Stevie is firing on all cylinders. Each song is a different scene from the best shot film featuring a black hitman and the story of his elegant lifestyle. Stevie has effectively made a lavish soundtrack that plays background to your boat trip on the isle. The mood is relaxed and confident, Crooks is taking his time to make sure his message is heard. The album is heavily jazz-influenced which brings visions of Toonami’s anime fight scenes and dogfights in space. You feel as cool as the protagonist.

The album rarely features drums. Usually saved for a specific moment, Stevie’s vocals are enough to paint a museum of elegance and beauty. “Vic Damone Jr” finds Stevie reflecting on his life and what it took to get there. A Vice City-esque beat supports Stevie’s wordplay and lyricism. There are several points throughout the album where I was stuck with this face:

Each track, Stevie is backhanding every rapper with Baby Powder. He makes this apparent on “Bullets & Bowties x Yellow Envelopes.” Rapping with the same ferocity of the bullets he fires, Stevie stamps his name into your memory, and sounds like he’s tired of reminding you. The album sounds like a victory lap. Stevie is focused and passionate about his vision. Flexing his skills on “Mazi in Malibu”, Stevie sounds like he’s having the time of his life. The outro sounds like the let out of a lavish ball. Ushers are handing out people’s coats while they stumble down the stairs. Inside the ballroom, the crystal ball slowly spins over the magnificent room. In the VIP section is a tired but well dressed Stevie Crooks with a glass of wine in his hand. He raises his glass and says, “cheers.” We fade to black. Roll credits.

A boss in his own right, Stevie is a hitman for hire and this album serves as his resume. “Clicquot Clique” is a celebratory bonus track that has Stevie thanking the listeners and fans for sticking with him through the pressure. He highlights his upbringing and how his influences have shaped him into the man he is today. Stevie Crooks is a true talent and has made an incredible work of art that will be played endlessly.
