Victoria Monet is known for her astounding songwriting abilities, both for herself and industry titans like Ariana Grande. In her new music video for her June single On My Mama, Monet takes a heavy step further into her star power.
The video features Monet dancing atop lowriders, in convenience store parking lots, and inside a warehouse. The carefully crafted choreography, wardrobe, and dynamic camera work combine to create a standout music video, which many on Twitter are calling an “ode to Black Southern culture.”
This point is further accentuated by Monet’s decision to not only sample southern rapper Charlie Boy’s song I Look Good, but also include him in the music video. The cadence of Charlie Boy’s voice over Monet’s song instantly transports the listener back to the 2000s southern rap era in a forward-looking way by embedding the sample into a modern r&b production.
“Biggest shout out to my team and to this SUPERSTAR CAST,” Monet said in a tweet announcing the video release. “This one was made with pure love for what we do and that’s what got us here.”
This single is meant to promote Monet’s debut album, a sequel to her 2020 EP Jaguar, which is aptly named Jaguar II and is scheduled to release on Aug. 25.
