“I did everything for the culture”

The king architect of autotune is back.

In 2005 music was blessed with a Rappa Ternt Sanga from Tallahassee, Florida named T-Pain. At the start of his career and on he topped charts with multiple records (as lead & features): “I’m Sprung,” “Buy U A Drank,” “Can’t Believe It” “Kiss Kiss,” “All I Do Is Win” and the list goes on. But back then, no one knew the huge impact he would have on music — especially Hip Hop. Pain kept hits kept coming like a factory until 2011 when he decided to take a break from music.

Even though he stepped back, his unique auto tune sound thrived on and still thrives, lasting for over a decade. Don’t believe it? Turn on the radio.

Now, he makes his return with the delivery of a new album. And it’s been a long time coming. Oblivion is Pain’s fifth studio album following his last project, Revolver. It holds 16 new tracks with some dope features.

Oblivion opens with a triumphant tune, “Who Died,” where Pain clears the air, assuring us that everything is good and he’s securing the bag. We’re also treated with a new collaboration beside Chris Brown (“Classic”) where the two croon over a lover and her *special* attributes. Going into “That’s How It Go” Pain showcases his super producing skills with a killer sample from Johnny Pate’s “Shaft in Africa” (1973).

“I hit the Billboards with a baseball bat, hit after hit”

Halfway through Pain smoothes it out with audible delight, “May I” ft. Mr Talkbox. The eight minute track is worth every second of a listen + it’s the perfect marriage of jazz & autotune. Then, at 5 minutes the beat kicks in for a musical match of jazz and trap! It’s possible that Pain birthed a new sound with this one.

Listening on to tracks 10 & 14 Pain links with Wale & Ty Dolla $ign for some vibes. Closing the project with “Second Chance,” he opens up about life the past six years and makes the argument that everyone deserves a shot at redemption. He pours it out over his sample of Gary Jules’ “Mad World.”

Well, the nappy head from Tallahassee is getting his second chance and we’re here to support it! Cop Oblivion below on iTunes & Spotify. Keep scrolling to watch his recent Breakfast Club interview where he discusses his absence from music, being uncredited, his financial status and more.
